Millers out of the Carabao Cup ... on-the-whistle report: Rotherham United 0 Morecambe 1

ROTHERHAM United became the latest Championship club to lose to lower-league opposition as they exited the Carabao Cup in the second round tonight.

They were beaten by 72nd-minute goal at AESSEAL New York Stadium by Morecambe from the division below.

The Millers, fielding a shadow side, had plenty of possession and territory but failed to muster an effort of target.

A goalkeeping error from Josh Vickers led to their departure from competition in which 15 second-tier sides didn't make it beyond the first round.

Rotherham were inches away from taking an eighth-minute lead when Cohen Bramall burst down the left and crossed for Georgie Kelly who just failed to connect in front of an open net.

Seconds later, Jamie Lindsay was given a sight of goal by new boy Brooke Norton-Cuffy's header but shot over from the edge of the area.

Jamie McCart, on his first New York start, also sent an effort over the woodwork: a header after Tom Eaves' nod-back from Scott High's corner.

Morecambe were neat, game opponents but all the openings were being created by the Millers and Lindsay hit the side-netting when Georgie Kelly's pass was a touch too strong and forced the midfielder wider than he wanted to be.

The clash wasn't the most glamorous in the Millers' calendar this season and the South Stand remained closed for the evening.

The gaggle of Morecambe fans who'd made the trip across the M62 were housed in the East Stand and were making themselves heard on a warm, sticky night in South Yorkshire.

The Shrimpers had their first attempt on goal on 25 minutes when Liam Gibson turned and shot just off target.

High lived up to his surname with the direction of his 20-yarder as he strode forward then, with the break approaching, the impressive Lee Peltier had plenty of power but too little accuracy in a close-range header.

Rotherham had loan wing-back Norton-Cuffy making his debut following his loan arrival from Arsenal yesterday while striker Tom Eaves was starting for the first time since a pre-season calf injury.

There had been a raft of changes to the usual line-up as manager Paul Warne took the chance to rest some of his key men before the visit of Birmingham City on Saturday when the Millers will be looking to extend their unbeaten league start to the season to five matches.

Vickers, centre-half McCart, midfielder High and centre-forward Kelly all made starts in a side captained by defender Peltier while Josh Kayode was on the bench after recovering from  hamstring pull.

The home side knew they had to step up a gear after the interval and Ollie Rathbone whipped a venomous shot wide in front of the North Stand.

Nearly all the attacking was now coming from Rotherham but as the game moved into the last 20 minutes they still hadn't brought a stop from Morecambe keeper Connor Ripley.

Vickers didn't have a save to his name either and that was still the case when the visitors took the lead with 18 minutes left.

Arthur Gnahoua ran in on goal and the Millers keeper, so good last season, won't be at all happy with the way he let a low shot go through him.

As the clock ticked down, the Shrimpers packed men behind the ball.

Rotherham substitute Chiedozie Ogbene was off target with a shot and then a header before Kelly fluffed his line in added time.

It was a tame end to a tame display.
