The Millers suffered a first-day setback in Staffordshire.

MANAGER Matt Taylor wants to speed up Rotherham United's recruitment after watching his side fall to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke City on Championship opening day.

The Millers were without a number of first-team contenders because of injury at the bet365 Stadium and couldn't call on the services of new striker Andre Green who has picked up a groin niggle.

The club are waiting for a work permit to come through so they can announce the permanent capture of French-born midfielder Christ Tiehi from Czech Republic side Slovan Liberec and among their other targets are another centre-half and frontman.

"The main thing is to strengthen certain areas and that is something we are still looking to do," said Taylor following yesterday's loss in which summer arrival Cafu was sent off.

"We need to do it sooner rather than later. That will be down to the recruitment team and the market."

Rotherham are in talks with two Premier League sides over loan moves for young players and have an offer on the table to veteran free-agent centre-forward Billy Sharp.

The Millers have reduced the amount in wages they're prepared to pay the former Sheffield United hot-shot after being kept waiting for a decision for six weeks and are looking at other attackers.

They have until the September 1 close of the transfer window to do business.
