ROTHERHAM United are in negotiations over a new contract for Josh Vickers as they seek to extend the goalkeeper’s stay at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The shot-stopper performed superbly earlier this month when he deputised for Viktor Johansson before being sidelined by  groin damage sustained in last week’s draw with Burnley.

His present deal expires in the summer when he will become a free agent unless he agrees fresh terms with the Millers.

The player says he is leaving discussions to his agent for now and described himself as “open-minded” about where his future might lie.

“There’s some stuff going on, some talks,” he told the Advertiser. “That’s for my representative to deal with. When the time comes, I’ll be part of the conversation.”

The club have no 12-month extension option on the keeper, manager Matt Taylor confirmed.

Vickers moved to Rotherham in November 2020 after leaving Lincoln City and then signed a two-year deal the following June.

The 27-year-old shared the jersey with Johansson in last season’s League One promotion push but had been restricted to cup outings in this campaign until coming into the side at Norwich City on April 10 when the Swede hurt his shoulder.

He likes being with the Millers but a player of his talent may want more regular first-team opportunities and he will be aware that his rival, Johansson, signed a new contract in January.

“I’m always open-minded about staying,” Vickers said. “We had success last year and I played quite a bit. I’m enjoying it here and location-wise, in terms of home life, it’s perfect. We’ll see.”

Taylor, who took the Rotherham hot-seat in October, said: “I have been keen to keep Josh since day one. We could see his worth, as a number one, as a number two and just having him around the place.

“He’s an outstanding goalkeeper and a fantastic person. We feel both he and Viktor have the potential to kick on and play at a top, top level. Josh is someone I want to keep on working with.”
