Derby County eyeing move for Rotherham United boss Paul Warne

ROTHERHAM United manager Paul Warne is Derby County's main target after Liam Rosenior this afternoon stepped down as interim boss at Pride Park.

Rosenior has held the reins since the departure of Wayne Rooney in the summer but has vacate the role and been offering a role on the coaching staff.

A League One promotion specialist like Warne - who has three times guided the Millers out of that division - will appeal to the Rams who are a point outside the play-off places in the third tier.

He is happy at AESSEAL New York after nearly six years in charge and with his side flying high in the Championship but the lure of a bigger budget at a bigger club may be hard to resist.

An approach from Derby could be imminent.

Reports linking Warne with a move to fellow Championship team Huddersfield Town appear to be wide of the mark.

The Terriers have yet to make any move for the 49-year-old as they seek a replacement for the sacked Danny Schofield and Warne doesn't fit their remit for their new boss despite the remarkable job he has done in South Yorkshire.

Town are seeking a manager who has experience with a major European club - possibly as a number two - and their former boss David Wagner, who once led them to the Premier League, is their number-one target.

Their head of fooball operations, Leigh Bromby, said: "What we want and what we think is right for the club is someone who can bring that level again; someone who has worked with a top club."
