Boss Matt Taylor addresses Rotherham United's away form

TOO few bodies and too much turf ... they're two of the reasons why Rotherham United are still waiting to put their first away points on the board this season, reckons manager Matt Taylor.

The injury-hit Millers have played well at AESSEAL New York Stadium in the opening stages of the Championship campaign but it's been another story during their four league matches on the road.

Explaining the difference in form, the boss said: “There are various factors. We haven't been at our strongest away from home in terms of our group and who's been available.

“We struggle to cover the space at other grounds. At New York, it's a tight pitch. You're able to get on top of the opposition and put them under intense pressure. We've not quite been able to replicate that elsewhere.

“Any good periods we've had haven't lasted long enough. We just feel we're a bit easy to be ‘got at’ and that we concede a bit too easily.”

Rotherham had eight players on their casualty list following last weekend's New York draw with Preston North End.

Taylor says the lack of numbers is felt more on their travels when the Millers can't afford to be weaker at the homes of bigger clubs.

Saturday brings another away day, at Cardiff City, following recent losses at Huddersfield Town and Millwall.

“We've learned a lot about the group in the last couple of games,” the manager said. “With bodies coming back, we'll have a few more options to address what needs to be addressed.”

United's winless record on opposition soil under Taylor stands at 18 matches but the boss, who succeeded Paul Warne last October, pointed out that the bad run stretches back further than his time in the hot-seat.

“The away form at this club has been poor for far too long at Championship level, not just during my reign,” he said.
