'Best away performance' says Stubbs

MILLERS boss Alan Stubbs saw cause for optimism in last night's tight defeat to Huddersfield Town.

Danny Ward cancelled out Elias Kachunga's early strike but a swift reply from Nahki Wells gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage they were able to hang on to.

A fifth straight away defeat, the result pushed the Millers to the bottom of the Championship and took the Terriers back to the top.

Stubbs said: "It was by far our best performance away from home but we came away with nothing. It's a plus in terms of the display and the character we showed but as I said to the players a couple of weeks ago, it's small margins between a dozen teams in this league. There's not an awful lot between them.

"I think we've seen an improvement, we need to build on it and if we keep doing that the results won't be too far around the corner."

While Stubbs was critical of referee Stuart Attwell for ignoring handball claims in the move that led to Town's winner, he was dismayed by his team's defending for their first goal.

"Not many teams have cut us open, we just need to stop giving really basic goals away by not clearing our lines" he said. "We had four opportunities to clear the penalty area on the first goal. I'd be disappointed if we had two, not four.

"We're not good enough to give teams a goal start, we need to start helping ourselves."
