FORMER Premier League striker Connor Wickham is not a target for Rotherham United in this month's transfer window, says manager Matt Taylor.

The 29-year-old, whose previous clubs include Sunderland and Crystal Palace, is a free agent after leaving League One Forest Green and has links to South Yorkshire from loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday.

However, Taylor revealed today that the Millers are looking elsewhere in their hunt for attacking talent.

"As far as I'm aware there hasn't been any communication between ourselves and Connor Wickham," the boss said.

When asked if he would like there to be, he replied: "Not at this moment in time, and that's no disrespect to the player.

"We're speaking to other players. As far as I am aware, there is no intention from the club to speak to that player."

Taylor also says he knows of no contact with Huddersfield Town's out-of-favour midfieder, Jon Russell, although he didn't deny that the ex-Chelsea youngster is on his radar.

"We know his situation," the manager said. "We know he hasn't featured as much as he would have liked this season. We know he's a good player. He's got a fantastic pedigree from previous seasons.

"We are assessing players and where they are are in terms of their squads: whether they're getting the opportunities they feel they deserve. We're in need of good players. We're assessing all situations."

Hounslow-born Russell, aged 22, was in Chelsea's youth ranks and moved to the Terriers in July 2021.

He made 22 appearances last term and only eight so far this season, with his last action coming in early October.
