Evans plays down transfer rumour mill

MILLERS boss Steve Evans has dismissed much of the transfer speculation surrounding the club as “complete nonsense” as he nears completing his squad for the new season.

While acknowledging that former loan goalkeeper Emi Martinez is on the radar and that discussions continue with Tottentham Hotspur about their central midfielder Grant Ward, he has ruled out several names doing the rounds.

Those include Brentford striker Will Grigg, who is fresh from a goals-littered loan spell at promoted MK Dons, and Lorrenzo Davids, cousin of former Holland international Edgar Davids.

Evants wants two or three more signings to add to the seven he has brought in this summer and, as the speculation mounts, he's hopeful of concluding some business over the next few days.

“There's not been a single player we have signed this summer who has come out of someone's lips first,” he said.

“The discussions that have taken place have been away from the club premises and these rumours we keep hearing are made up in a back bedroom.

“The Grigg rumours are absolute nonsense, as are the ones about Davids. I have never even seen him.

“What I can say is that we are in the market for a goalkeeper and we are close with one and we are working to make that happen. People think the main option is Emi Martinez. He's Premier League class but there are other alternatives out there.

Emi is on our radar but so are others.”
