Evans delighted to land Becchio

ROTHERHAM United beat off Leeds, Charlton and a clutch of other Championship and foreign clubs to clinch the signature of striker Luciano Becchio.

Manager Steve Evans surprised everyone on Monday when he nipped in to sign the experienced Argentinean front man before the transfer deadline.

It was the result of a patient and careful approach in which interest was lodged with his parent club, Norwich City, more than a week earlier.

Competition was stiff, given Becchio's goals littered years at Leeds before the Canaries took him to Carrow Road last summer.

While Sheffield Wednesday were also understood to be interested, the 30-year-old chose Rotherham, signing on loan until January with an option to stay until the end of the season.

Evans told the Advertiser: “When Luciano plays consistently in the Championship, he scores a goal every other game and that's why there was so much interest in him.

“We'd been talking to Norwich for ten days. Myself and the chairman kept our powder dry and Norwich made sure we stayed fully in the picture."

Becchio will join the week's other new signing, club record capture Jonson Clarke-Harris from Oldham Athletic, when the players report in to prepare for next Saturday's game at Bournemouth.
