Education leader signs up

MEET Rotherham United's latest signing—although he won't be kicking a ball!

That's because John Boulton has a busy brief as the Millers Community Sports Trust's new education officer.

Operating alongside the club's cohesion, disability, health and participation Officers, he will work to provide youngsters with channels to lifelong employment in Rotherham using the power of football and sport to engage them in a varied curriculum.

The goal will be to get them jobs in the leisure and sports industry, among others.

John said: "This is a unique and exciting opportunity for me and for the people of Rotherham. I hope our interesting, alternative, education programme will invigorate young people and I'm confident we can make a difference in the town."

Head of Community Dale Spiby said: "John brings more than 25 years of teaching experience both in special and mainstream education, specialising in working with disaffected youngsters."

His appointment coincides with the opening of the Trust's fantastic GOALZ education facility at Mangham House.

One of its first projects will be a new 12-week Get Ready for Work course for 16-18 year-olds.

Beginning in January and funded by the European Social Fund and Skills Fund Agency, it aims to give young people from all backgrounds a leg-up in starting work.

John said: "It will be the first step into work for some young people and provide a foundation of health and safety, employment law, how to apply for jobs and interview techniques along with over 120 hours of practical experience delivering sports coaching.

"Young people undertaking the course will also receive incentives such as matchday tickets."

During the initial 12 week programme the participants will work towards a Sports Leaders qualification as well as the chance to take part in a second course to further develop their employability skills.

Anyone wanting to know more about the course or the Millers' education work is welcome to contact John Boulton at [email protected] or ring 07506 722899.
