Derby night misery for Millers

ROTHERHAM United slipped to a third straight defeat as they came off best in their Yorkshire derby with fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town.

A goal in each half from Mustapha Carayol and substitute Ishmael Miller sealed a 2-0 loss which leaves them anchored in the Championship relegation zone.

Town took the initiative from the off and Nahki Wells, Sean Scannell, Ben Chilwell and Harry Bunn all had goalkeeper Lee Camp scrambling.

A last ditch tackle thwarted Danny Ward in a rare foray from Rotherham but it was no surprise when the Terriers broke the deadlock just past the half-hour mark. Carayol wasn’t properly closed down when the ball fell to him 25 yards out and he despatched a thumping effort that left Camp flailing.

That strike left the Millers chasing a game yet again and it wasn’t until the second half that they started to ask questions of the home team.

Joe Newell worked himself room with a smart shimmy and forced Jed Steer to block with his legs but after defending a series of corners, Huddersfield were able to weather the storm and doubled their advantage on 73 minutes when substitute  Miller raced through to coolly slot home.

Substitute Luke Hyam was unlucky to hit a post after a mistake by Steer but it was Town who finished the stronger.
