Death of former Millers cup finalist

FORMER Rotherham United player Ken Waterhouse has died, aged 86.

A member of the 1961 League Cup final side, Ken joined the Millers in 1958 from Preston North End and had five seasons at the club.

He initially played at centre forward but following the dismissal of Andy Smailes, new manager Tom Johnston moved Ken back to play in the old left-half position in which he is best remembered by Rotherham supporters.

Ken left for Bristol City in 1963 and finally had a brief spell at Darlington. He had two successful spells as player/manager then manager of Morecambe. Ken was also coach at Blackburn Rovers for a short period.

He died in Royal Lancaster Hospital yesterday afternoon;

Millers supporter Barrie Dalby, who kept in touch with Ken, said: "I shall remember Ken as a true gentleman who it was a pleasure to know in his latter years. He was always interested in the fortunes of the Millers as well as Preston and Morecambe."
