Tons of runs...Thorpe Hesley cricketer Mateo Boulogne reflects on sparkling double century in Yorkshire Southern Premier League

A LOCAL cricketer has blasted his way into the record books with a sparkling double century.

Mateo Boulogne hit 209 for Thorpe Hesley & High Green in the Yorkshire Southern Premier League, setting a new best for the club.

The West Indies ace's big knock against Parkhead included 23 fours and five sixes and is one of only a handful of double centuries in the league in recent years.

“My previous best was 199, so I've finally made it to a double century,” smiled Mateo.

“It was one of those days when everything was coming off the bat so well.

“I stuck around and batted patiently and it was quite smooth to be honest. It was more about control. We were coming up against a bottom of the league side so I just wanted to make sure I capitalised.

“I didn't want to give away anything much and I took advantage of what was there basically.”

The scoreboard at Thorpe Hesley's ground at Smithywood Road only goes up to 199, so spectators were able to tot up the final few runs of the innings themselves.

It was the second time the big hitter has broken Thorpe's league batting record this season, having scored 162 against Collegiate earlier this summer.

Now in his second season there he scored 1,300 runs in weekend and midweek cricket last year and is already over the 1,000 mark for 2023.

“I enjoy Thorpe Hesley. It's a nice club with good people,” he added. “I've had a decent time there so I thought I'd come back and have another year.

“A double century is a nice accomplishment but I can add more and bigger things in the future.”

The innings helped Thorpe pile up 344 against Parkhead before they bowled out their visitors for 172 to complete victory, Chris Fisher taking four wickets.

Boulogne still has some way to go to eclipse the league's biggest innings.

That was the 270 by Australian Jake Weatherald for Barnsley against Whiston Parish Church last summer.

Thorpe can nevertheless look forward to more runs from their opening bat.

Secretary Andy Fisher said: “Mateo has been a big asset, not just with his batting but also his general involvement with the club. He's a real favourite with the lads as well.”
