Chasing down a total of 242-8, the visitors fell just one run short having gone into the final over needing 15 to win and 14 to draw.

The 12 points pulled Tickhill level with leaders and rivals Doncaster Town, who lost to Collegiate.

“It got tight, a lot tighter than I wanted, but Appleby batted well to be fair and it was a really good game,” said Rowland.

"They needed three to win off the last ball and two to draw and we had a run-out while they were going for the second.

"After losing out to them last season for the league, it was important, especially with Doncaster getting beaten."

Jim Morgan hit 81 for the victors and James Stuart 51, repeating their heavy scoring of last season against Frod’ on the same ground and producing a similar partnership in similar circumstances.

Next up for Tickhill is a trip to Elsecar on Saturday, the first of a six-match run-in that ends with a potential winner-takes-all match at home to fierce rivals Doncaster.

"We have a decent record against Elsecar, touch wood,” added Alex.

“They have a good side, they just seem to be under-performing. It sometimes worries me we will be the team they turn up against but we’ll have a strong side out so hopefully we should be alright.”

Treeton moved into the top four after a comfortable win over Barnsley at Shaw Lane. The hosts elected to bat first and were all out for 154, Will Street taking 4-21. Even though Treeton lost their openers cheaply and Steve Foster retired injured, Onke Nyaku (75 not out) and Sam Drury (61 not out) took them home by eight wickets.
