Coldwell chases another McDonnell win

TWO down and one to go — and fight boss Dave Coldwell is confident that Gavin McDonnell can light up Sheffield Arena tomorrow night.

After steering Jamie McDonnell to two WBA World Bantamweight titles this year, Coldwell will now aim to propel the Doncaster fighter’s twin brother to equal heights.

Gavin takes on French big-hitter Jeremy Parodi across the Tinsley Viaduct tomorrow with the European Super Bantamweight crown on the line.

And Coldwell is brimming with confidence that his man will defend the belt won at the same venue in March when he beat Oleksandr Yegorov and then kick on to reach the top.

He said: “This man has worked so hard to improve and to get into the best shape of his life for his big title defence.

“It's the toughest fight of his career against Jeremy Parodi but he's prepared fantastically as he knows a win in front of a live Sky Sports audience will push him further towards emulating his brother Jamie in becoming a world champion. "

Rotherham fighters Atif Shafiq, Josh Wale and Lee Appleyard are also on the bill.

Shafiq will use his scrap with Bolsover’s Jamie Robinson to firmly realign his sights on a potential title.

A win last time out against Lee Connolly in May put memories of his surprise defeat against Abdon Cesar in the past. 21-year-old Shafiq has otherwise won 14 of his 15 fights.

Fellow lightweight Appleyard has a similar cause. He overcame  Yousef al-Hamidi at Doncaster Dome  in August following defeat against Adam Hague in Barnsley in June. The 27 year old from Wickersley meets Andy Harris tomorrow.

Brampton’s Josh Wale is confident he’s back to his best and will look to swat aside the challenge of Leigh Wood.
