Villa, who made only three changes to the side beaten by Liverpool on Saturday, weathered a spell of pressure before going ahead on 20 minutes when Andreas Weimann rifled into the top corner from 20 yards.

Paul Lambert’s side also made their second clear opening count five minutes before half time. Kari Arnason lost possession and Christian Benteke met Gabby Agbonlahor’s cross with a far post header for 2-0.

Ben Pringle rifled Rotherham’s best chance of the half a yard wide but it was effectively game over when Fabian Delph tucked away the third goal eight minutes after the break.

Michael O’Connor and Lee Frecklington went closest to grabbing a consolation goal before the team walked off to a warm ovation from their 3,000 travelling supporters.

It was the Millers’ first defeat in 11 matches.
