Alfie interest intensifies

ROTHERHAM United are virtually resigned to losing striker Adam Le Fondre after an upsurge of interest in the player in the last 24 hours.

In addition to another bid from Sheffield Wednesday which fell well short of the club's valuation, chairman Tony Stewart said yesterday that there had been two other offers this week, one from the Championship and one from League One.

The Championship bid is believed to be from Coventry City, who previously made a player push cash proposal, while two other Championships clubs are understood to be monitoring the situation.

At the time of writing, the Millers hierarchy didn't know whether he would still be a Rotherham player either by the time of tomorrow's game against Gillingham or Wednesday's August transfer deadline and stressed that the situation was fluid.

Mr Stewart told the Advertiser: "There has been more interest in the last 24 hours than in the last ten days.

"Alfie's ambition has always been to play at a higher level and it is that ambition that is driving it. He has started off the season on fire and that's been recognised by others.

"We've had some lovely discussions with Alfie. We don't want him to go but we don't want to stand in his way either.

"Unfortunately, we are resigned to losing him but we are determined to hold on for what he is worth and we need to get a fair return because we need to replace him. He is aware of the situation."

The Millers bid to build upon their unbeaten start whey take on Gillingham at Don Valley Stadium tomorrow.
