Teenagers eye dream destination

THREE Rotherham students have their sights set on a challenging day in the West Midlands next weekend — with a shot at a dream trip to the Middle East awaiting them.

The Thomas Rotherham College teenagers are preparing to compete in the prestigious WorldSkills UK Competition at the NEC in Birmingham from November 13 to 15.

Specialist make-up student, Emily Day (19), and IT students Kyle Somerset (19) and Connor Kirkby (17), will be competing to win Gold, Silver and Bronze in their section at the UK Skills Competition, with the winner heading off to Abu Dhabi to compete in the World Skills Competition in 2017.

Emily competed in the regional stage of the UK Skills Competition, which is called Matchfit, with a theme of Out of the Shadows.

She came third and earned her place to compete in the UK Skills Competition in November at the Birmingham event.

Emily is in the Professional Services section and will compete in the Media Make-up competition with the theme of horoscopes.

She is now busy preparing her design by creating a mood board, practising her techniques and creating parts of her costume.

Emily said: “I’m really excited and nervous but I know it will be lots of fun.

“I have lots of people supporting me and I've received 100 per cent support from college.”

Kyle and Connor competed in Portsmouth in the Matchfit competition where they had to build a website.

In the UK Skills competition they are in the Business, Administration and IT section and they will compete in the Web Development competition.

They will not know the exact brief until they get to the competition so they are now brushing up on all of their skills.
