Orbison at the cricket club!

READING about Tom Jones and Freddie and the Dreamers etc. coming to Rawmarsh Baths, reminded me of what I did around 1995.

Our son-in-law at the time borrowed our car pretty regularly. One day I found a blank cassette tape in the drawer and as I had a VHS tape of Roy Orbison I thought I would record Roy off the VHS onto the cassette for the car. At the time cars didn’t have CD players, at least ours didn’t.

I put the cassette into the music centre, fixed up the mike, pressed record and announced “Ladies and gentlemen for one night only at Rawmarsh Cricket Club the one and only Roy Orbison”. Stop, then I put the mike on its stand, put the video tape in the machine, put the television on, pressed play and record on the music centre. Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello and Bruce Springstein in black and white were transferred to tape music.

The son-in-law came and borrowed the car and when he fetched it back said “when was Roy Orbison at the Cricket Club?”

“Regular,” I said.
