Grant plea rejected

Sir—I would like to express my anger and frustration at Anston Parish Council, in particular, Cllr Iain St John.

I have recently applied for a grant for a small group of children. This application was rejected at the insistence of one person, Cllr St John.

The group of children, whose ages range from five to 12, live in one of the most deprived areas of Anston and indeed the borough.

Over time these kids have organised themselves to raise money by way of sponsored walks and car washing in order to buy sports equipment for local kids.

The application was considered at the last meeting of the parish council, where the council granted money to all the same local groups who apply year, in year out, for grants.

Needless to say all the other grants were given, with the full backing of Cllr St John, but when it came to the kids’ application it was quite clear that Cllr St John did not want to give our kids money.

Why did he start making a big issue of “who were the adults” when it had been pointed out to him who the group was and that the group had a bank account.

It was noted that he never asked the same question when the children’s football teams were given £100. Nor did he question the bank details of any other of the groups who asked for money.

At Cllr St John’s insistence this application was stopped, but why? We try to encourage our kids to better themselves, but a knock back like this is deplorable.

Shame on you councillor.

Sheldon-Ennis (Mrs), Caperns Road, North Anston.
