Witness plea after two hit by cars on M1

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a four-vehicle collision which saw two men struck by out-of-control cars as they stood waiting for help on the hard shoulder.

The incident happened around a mile before junction 33 of the M1 southbound carriageway at Treeton in icy conditions at around 8.10am on Saturday morning and left one of the men in a life-threatening condition and the other seriously hurt.

A silver Ford Focus apparently lost control on the icy road surface and came to rest on the hard shoulder, facing in the wrong direction.

The driver of a yellow Highways Mercedes goods vehicle stopped to help and both men left their vehicles.

Meanwhile, a collision involving a silver Vauxhall Vectra and a grey Volkswagen Passat resulted in both cars spinning out of control.

A police spokesman said: “The Vectra collided with the two men standing at the side of the carriageway, before going on to hit the rear of the Highways vehicle and stopping partly in lane one.

“The Passat hit the Focus and came to rest on the hard shoulder.”

The Highways vehicle driver, a 42-year-old man from the Upton area of Pontefract, West Yorkshire, was taken to Rotherham General Hospital, where his condition is described as stable after surgery.

The Passat driver, a 56-year-old man from Shiregreen, and his passenger, a 26-year-old man from Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, both suffered minor injuries and were taken to Rotherham Hospital.

The Vectra driver, a 30-year-old man from Leeds, and his front seat passenger, a 27-year-old Leeds woman, both sustained minor injuries and were taken to the NGH.
