CELEBS IN TOWN: Steve Madin, Simon Stringer and Jennifer Hall and their hard working team who organised the T-Fest Music Festival and Richard Stoodley and his Tickhill Velo Cycling Club colleagues who organised the Tickhill Grand Prix cycles races are happy with the success of the events. Among the several thousand people that were attracted to the town over the two weekends were a number of celebrities. Grimsby-born racing motorcyclist and television personality Guy Martin, who is a keen cycling enthusiast, was a spectator at the cycle racing. Celebrated award-winning television and West End actress Sheridan Smith from Epworth, whose brother is a member of the band The Torn, was there to watch him while legendary former Yardbirds and Cream rock and blues guitarist Eric Clapton was in town to see his musician daughter Doncaster-born Ruth Kelly-Clapton perform. The T-Fest team also arranged for Avro Vulcan XH558 to make a pass over the town.

REMEMBERING JOYE: Former Tickhill resident Joye Powlett-Smith, who was South Yorkshire’s first lady high sheriff, died at her Oxford home on September 19 aged 89. Mrs Powlett-Smith moved to Oxfordshire in 2010 to be near her family. She was a volunteer with a number of charities and she was appointed high sheriff in 1989 and awarded an OBE in 1996. Joye, the widow of Sheffield solicitor Sydney Powlett-Smith, could be seen around Tickhill every day walking her black and white dog Trump. Her pet went missing one day but was found fit and well in Bedfordshire. A memorial service for Joye will be held at St Martin's Church in Firbeck on Sunday, which would have been Joye’s 90th birthday.

PAIR NET AWARDS: Tickhill Tennis Club member Michael Chapman lifted the annual Jeanne Young Trophy after winning the event that remembers their late club treasurer. Michael Wilson was the runner-up in the tournament that was contested on the all-weather courts at the Tithes Lane recreation ground. Games now continue on Sunday mornings until April next year when the full summer season starts again.

DEDICATED KNITTERS: The dedicated members of the Mother Teresa Knitting Group, that number around 40 in total, have handed over 191 items of clothing that they have made since July at their monthly get-togethers in the Sunderland Street Christian Fellowship Church. The items have been taken over to the Christian Africa Relief Trust (CART) in Huddersfield from where they will be distributed to the needy in Africa. New members and donations of double knitting wool are welcomed.

COUNCILLORS CONCERNED: Tickhill Town Council has told DMBC that it is concerned about planning applications that affect the community. Councillors are not happy about the use of land at Hindley Lane off Apy Hill Lane where a stable block is to be built and touring caravan sited. They are also uneasy about the plans to build a detached house on land at the rear of The Croft off Lindrick Lane.

TWIN TOWN: A member of the public who attended the monthly meeting of Tickhill Town Council has put forward the idea of twinning Tickhill with the village of St Jouan-des Guerets in Brittany, France. Tickhill already has a thriving French Society and is planning to build a boules pitch at the Tithes Lane recreation ground. Councillors will discuss the twinning proposal at their October meeting.
