WEATHER LATEST: Bin collections halted

ROTHERHAM bin collections have been suspended due to the bad weather

Teams for Rotherham Council staff have been working round the clock over the weekend to keep traffic flowing but a borough council spokeswoman said that drivers of the 32-tonne waste vehicles are finding some of the side roads very hazardous.

Householders are being advised to put their waste bins out as usual and waste teams will resume the collection service as soon as possible.

The four household waste recycling centres across the borough are also experiencing difficulties. It is hoped they will be open later todayonce the snow has been cleared.

The spokesman said Rotherham Mobile Library and Book Link services would not be running today because of both the weather conditions and  technical issues.

Heavy snow overnight closed Rotherham schools, blocked motorways and interrupted buses across the borough.

Up too four inches of snow made some side roads almost impassable to traffic.

Nearly 70 schools told pupils to stay away today as teachers struggled to make their way in.

Others opened late to give staff and students extra time to battle through the blizzard.

Traffic was slow on both the M1 and M18 around Rotherham, though snow-related congestion had begun easing by 9am.

Buses were limited to main routes — 15 Rotherham services were diverted or cancelled.
