Your Chance To Shine

I RECKON there’s a little bit of the performer in all of us.

Some choose to do it “properly” by spending hours creating a show that can earn them money on the clubland circuit.

Others prefer the more laid back, relaxed option, which probably explains why open mic evenings are sprouting up all over the place.

Certainly in Rotherham in recent times I’ve noticed that several venues have become regular haunts for those wanting to show off their talents in a small way.

So I decided to nip in to the Chequers at Whiston which has just started monthly open mic evenings after a break.

They ran for about a year first time round, under the guidance of Clive Davies and proved to be a popular addition to entertainment at the pub.

It’s all very informal and there is no hint of competition among those taking part.

Everybody does their own thing in their own way and it works admirably.

There’s a wide age range and quality varies, but that’s not what it’s all about.

Clive says: “People take part for various reasons.

“Some have never performed in front of audience before. Others just like to have a sing and we have experienced musicians who might just like to try out material.

“It’s an easy going, non threatening environment and it doesn’t matter whether you’re good or bad or if you mess up.

“It’s all about enjoyment and having fun.

“But, like a box of chocolates, we never know quite what we are likely to get on any given evening.”

And that was certainly the case the evening I went along.

Come to think, I might even have a go myself at the next one.

The Chequers open mic evenings are on the first Wednesday of every month at about 8.30pm.
