All the activities were designed to teach children key words and get them to think about the importance of staying safe when out and about.

Liz Gill, of Mommas Day Nursery, said: "There is nothing more important than keeping our children safe.

"We were delighted to take part in Beep Beep Day and urge all drivers in Rotherham to slow down in our community and watch out for children."

Every week, ten children aged eight or under are killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads.

A survey of 714 parents across the UK, by the road safety charity Brake, found that around half said that the road where they lived was plagued by speeding drivers.

Mary Williams, chief executive of Brake, who organised the event, added: "Every death is a horrendous tragedy for the family and the community in which they live.

"These deaths can stop if we do the most basic things: hold our children's hands, belt them up in the correct child seats, and slow down when driving around communities."

The event was sponsored by Churchill Insurance and any funds raised by children on the day will go towards Brake.
