Worker killed in town centre food store

A MAINTENANCE man who was carrying out work at a town centre store died following a fatal accident on Monday.

The 58-year-old sub-contractor from Keighley, West Yorkshire, was working at Iceland carrying out routine air-conditioning work.

Police have not yet officially named the man.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said police and other emergency services were called to the Sycamore Road store just after noon following reports of an injury.

The spokeswoman added: “The man was taken by ambulance to Rotherham Hospital, where he later died.

“Rotherham Borough Council’s environmental health team is investigating.”

A spokeswoman for Iceland said: “Unfortunately we can confirm that a fatal accident occurred at our Rotherham store.

“This involved a contractor’s employee who was undertaking routine maintenance of the store’s air conditioning equipment.

“We are working with the contractor and the appropriate authorities to establish exactly what happened, and can make no further comment until these investigations have been completed.

“Naturally our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this most difficult time.”

The Health and Safety Executive said it was not involved in the investigation and it was a matter for the local authority.

An inquest is expected to open next week.
