The Aussie midfielder was a man of the match contender at rain-soaked Spotland, his commitment highlighted in the dying minutes when he sprinted back 60 metres to thwart a raid by the hosts.

While the 1-0 victory, sealed by Richard Wood's second-half header, didn't score highly for style, the end result was all that mattered for Williams.

"It was one of the hardest games I have played in for a very, very long time," the 23-year-old Aussie told the Advertiser. "It was up and down and I was in our box more than I was in their box.

"In games like that, sometimes you don't get on the ball as much as you want or do exactly as much as you want to but we won 1-0, grinded it out and came away with three points. I was just buzzing with the win."
