Willett splits with mentor Cowen

STRUGGLING golf star Danny Willett has split with mentor Pete Cowen — just weeks after turning to the Rotherham coach to help solve his ongoing problems.

Five months after ditching caddie and friend Jon Smart following a bust-up, the Rotherham Golf Club ace hoped that Cowen would be able to get his ailing career back on track. Cowen, rated as one of the best coaches in the world at his Droppingwell base, had previously helped propel Willett to stardom, including being in his corner at last year’s Masters triumph.

But after the player finished stone last at last week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational, Willett decided to switch tack and is now working with Tiger Woods’ former coach Sean Foley.

Cowen said diplomatically: “Danny decided he wanted a fresh pair of eyes and now he’s working with Sean.

“There’s been no falling out and we wish him all the best. We had some good times together and, I think it’s fair to say, he was quite successful in those times.”

Willett is desperate to get back up the golfing ladder. In his 15 events so far this season, he has failed to make the weekend in eight of them, missing the cut in five and withdrawing from three, sliding to 49th in the rankings.
