Why we Brits need a fair deal

Sir, I can only echo the sentiments of S. Longden (Advertiser, October 29).

Sir,  I can only echo the sentiments of S. Longden (Advertiser, October 29).

I for another am heartily sick at being branded a racist for merely showing a little national pride at anything other than sporting events, which it has to be said in light of most recent performances, is the last thing we should be showing pride in.

There were no over-paid, petulant, imbeciles fighting for our continued freedom in the last World Wars.

There were none defending our furthest outcrop in the South Atlantic and, as Mr Longden points out, there are none in Afghanistan/Iraq at the moment.

Why then, when we try to show a little national pride, and in my case this comes by reporting a major case of benefit fraud to the authorities, and eventually to my own MP John Healey, do we just get the brush off and be accused of racism?

Unfortunately, along with Mr Longden, I remain as proud of our fine nation and its national flag.

I have no problem being referred to as a 'Brit' and I am quite proud of the fact that people see Britain as such a fine place to live they are prepared to risk life and limb getting here.

What I do have a problem with are the ones who have arrived and are not prepared to contribute anything, other than a half hour appointment at the DSS offices signing on.

All I want is England to be a level playing field, and the English to get a fair game without permanently playing uphill against the wind.
