Why Rawmarsh teachers are on strike

Sir--I am a teacher at Rawmarsh community school and a member of the NUT and would like to point out that we are striking for the following reasons.

While some teachers have been able to job share, resulting in fewer compulsory rendundancies for teachers,25 teaching posts have still been lost from the school, this WILL result in larger class sizes.

At least 9 members of staff will be redundant and leave at Easter. Many of these staff do in fact teach students and this will impact greatly upon their lessons. Furthermore, we have lost many oustanding teachers who feel they can no longer work at RCS, due to the subversive manner in which this process has been carried out. The community and parents of Rawmarsh should be given ALL of the facts in this case and not just spoon fed diluted figures that skim over basic details such as increased class sizes and no impact on teaching and learning.

Members of the NUT have wrestled with their conscience about taking strike action, but given the nature of these cuts, we simply cannot sit and do nothing.

One should also the question, how is it that after only half a term in office, the new head was able to decide what the community of Rawmarsh really need?

These cuts will harm education, it is not just unavoidable, it is wrong.
