We're ready for cuts, says South Yorkshire police chief

CHIEF Con Meredydd Hughes says South Yorkshire Police is well prepared for cuts following the Government’s Spending Review.

Chancellor George Osborne announced this afternoon that police spending would fall by four per cent annually for the next four years.

But full details have yet to be made clear, including whether this accounts for inflation and hoe much individual authorities will receive.

Chief Con Hughes said: “This level of reduced central government funding is in line with our expectations and our planning has been appropriate and timely.

“We cannot say how many police officer or civilian staff posts we will lose over the next four years but there is no doubt that regardless of where jobs are lost from, front line effectiveness will be reduced.

South Yorkshire Police has prepared for this moment for some years. We have increased our reserves and already cut a number of non-operational posts.”

South Yorkshire Police Authority chairman Charles Perryman said: “On initial reaction the reduction in budget is not as bad as first feared.

“However, we still need clarification from the Home Office as to what these cuts in funding will mean in real terms and the sooner this can be done, the sooner we can begin planning for the future.”
