“WE WILL not give up”.

That was the message from the detective leading the murder investigation into the death of a pensioner who was brutally attacked nearly three years ago.

Tommy Ward (80) was attacked in his Salisbury Road home in Maltby in October 2015 and died from his injuries nearly five months later.

The former miner’s £30,000 life savings were stolen.

There have been several arrests during the investigation but no-one has been charged.

Det Chief Insp Martin Tate this week pledged that the investigation would continue. He told the Advertiser: “It is still being investigated and always will be. We will not give up.”

DCI Tate said a video appeal last year had received a positive response. But he added: “Nothing came out that smashed it wide open.”

DCI Tate (below) said that “a number of people” had been arrested over the years but were released without charge.

Mr Ward’s injuries included a fractured skull, a bleed on the brain and a broken jaw, while his left index finger was so badly damaged it had to be amputated. The war veteran also had a footprint-like mark on his chest.

Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting incident 408 of October 1, 2015.
