VIDEO: Terrorism cops launch film to show how public can help

COMMUNITIES are being urged to help the fight against terrorism by reporting suspicious behaviour and a new film is highlighting how the public can help.

The 60 second video (below) from Counter Terrorism Policing North East is based on real-life foiled plots and shows examples of terrorist-related suspicious activity and behaviour.

The video has been released as part of its Action Counters Terrorism campaign, which is being supported by South Yorkshire Police and six other regional forces.

The specialist police force said any piece of information “could make the difference between a lethal attack or a successful disruption” and said more than a fifth of reports from the public had produced intelligence which had helped to tackle terrorism threats.

Head of CTP North East, Det Chief Supt Martin Snowden said: “The key to tackling the growing threat from terrorism is our relationship with, and the support of, local communities.

“Any piece of information you may have could be important.

“Anything you have seen or heard, anything that your instincts tell you isn’t right, please report it.

“Specially trained officers and staff will take that information and ensure that it is dealt with in the most appropriate way.

“Your decision could help the police prevent terrorism and save lives.”

Since the beginning of 2017, ten Islamist and four right-wing terror plots have been foiled, largely due to information from the public.

Of the 31,000 public reports to Counter Terrorism (CT) Policing during 2017, more than 6,600 resulted in useful intelligence.

Counter terrorism police are urging the public to report suspicious behaviour and activity via their website at gov.uk/ACT.
