Sam Poucher (18), of Harthill, was getting ready for a night on the tiles with his nine mates at 7pm on Sunday when the blaze broke out in a nearby room of their Magaluf hotel, BH Mallorca.

It was Sam’s second night at the hotel — billed as “Magaluf’s most exciting new hotel in the party capital of the world” — and the fire is believed to have been started by pranksters using a lighter and aerosol can to set a sleeping friend’s feet on fire.

Around £125,000 worth of damage has been caused, according to national media reports, and firefighters had to rescue seven trapped tourists.

Sam (pictured below right with friend Jack Robinson) said he had been in his friend’s hotel room waiting for his mate to finish getting ready when he heard “smashing, banging and people screaming”.

He recalled: “We thought it was a fight.

“One of the lads opened the door to check and there was smoke everywhere in the corridor, which then filled the room.

“We walked out and could see the huge fire — everyone was running around, it must have been going for a good five minutes before we even knew there was a fire.

“No smoke alarms or sprinklers had gone off — it must have taken around ten minutes before an alarm went off — and by that time the fire brigade was already there.”

Thick black smoke filled the corridor, Sam said, as hotel staff used a hose reel from the corridor balcony to try and dampen the flames.

In a video shot by Sam, shouts can be heard of “open the window” as staff try to aim water into the apartment.

“None of the staff spoke to us — they were carrying on doing their own thing, there was no organisation,” he said.

Despite the drama, Sam and his friends were in no mood to miss out on a night out.

“We had a bar crawl booked and we just thought: ‘We’re going out!’,” he said.

Guests on the floor where the blaze started were moved into different rooms after the fire.

“Everywhere just stinks of smoke and the staff offered to wash our clothes if we wanted,” Sam added.

“It was a bang-on holiday, the rooms are quite nice as well.

“It’s not put me off going back. It doesn’t really faze me.”

The hotel tweeted on the night: “Thanks to the amazing fire brigade and police who were here earlier this evening. Fire out and nobody hurt. Heroes.”

The hotel has been contacted for a comment.

Four Brits — two women and two men aged 19 to 21 — have appeared in court in Majorca’s capital, Palma, accussed of starting the fire
