VIDEO: Former POW Gordon Smith tells his WWII story

A WORLD War Two veteran and prisoner of war, who mined coal for the Japanese on just one bowl of rice a day, has died.

Gordon Smith witnessed the atomic bombing of Hiroshima from a prison camp nearby, where he narrowly avoided death by disease and at the hands of his captors.

Mr Smith, of South Avenue in Swinton, died last month, aged 97. The Advertiser was privileged to speak to Mr Smith in 2013, when he described some of his wartime experiences.
