VIDEO: Campaigning former Eastender Brooke Kinsella visits Rotherham

ACTRESS Brooke Kinsella, whose teenage brother was fatally stabbed while, visited Rotherham on Wednesay to see how gun and knife crime is being tackled.

Twenty-six-year-old Brooke - Kelly Taylor in BBC soap EastEnders - has been asked by the Government to tour the country looking at a range of projects that combat serious youth violence.

Brooke's task is almost a personal campaign after her 16-year-old brother Ben died in hospital in June 2008.

He had been stabbed while out celebrating the end of his GCSEs in Islington, north London.

Brooke said: “The message I've always given from day one when my brother died is the word 'choice' and this very much promotes that.

“I kind of started this journey thinking, naively, that I’ll be able to bring Ben back in some way.

"But if I can’t bring Ben back, then I want to stop someone else from going.”

The Prime Minister has given Brooke licence to conduct the fact-finding mission and Brooke will report directly back to Home Secretary Theresa May on schemes that appear to be making a real difference.

Brooke's day in the county started with presentations at SYP's Lifewise Centre, on the Magna site in Rotherham.

This includes charity In2Change, which stemmed from a partnership between Serco, HMP and YOI Doncaster, and aims to offer young offenders advocacy and resettlement support back into the community.

It was followed by Point 7, which was devised by Pc Alan Hancock, and delivers hard-hitting messages on gun and knife crime to young people.
