VE Day celebrations bring back wartime memories: PICTURES

VISITORS to a Rotherham village could be forgiven for thinking that they had stepped back in time after locals turned back the clock to 1945 for their VE Day celebrations.

Residents in Laughton marked the 65th anniversary of Victory in Europe with a themed day at the village’s All Saints’ Church on Saturday.

More than 150 people flocked to the rural landmark—many of them in period dress—to enjoy a day where everything from the clothes to the food, music and transport, harked back to the wartime period.

One of the organiser’s, Anita Plowright, said: “Everyone did their best to evoke memories of that era and that we had food straight out of the ration book and enjoyed a George Formby tribute act.”

The VE Day celebrations at Laughton’s All Saints’ Church on Saturday were the second of their kind in two years.

It is hoped that the event will become an annual highlight of the village’s social calendar.

It was originally organised by Laughton’s Support All Saints’ group to raise money for the village church.
