Upgrade to make towpath easier for riders

CYCLISTS will benefit from plans to improve the canal towpath between Rotherham and Tinsley.

Rotherham Borough Council is to install a 2.5m wide hard surface between Centenary Way and Tinsley with funding from South Yorkshire’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The work is aimed at improving sustainable access to employment and training in the Lower Don Valley, Sheffield and Rotherham and will replace the current wet and muddy surface.

The funding bid to the Department of Transport also included improvements to the towpath and the Five Weirs Walk between Rotherham and Sheffield.

Links onto the canal towpath from Templeborough, Masbrough and Kimberworth have also been identified for improvement and also proposed to remove the existing cantilevered section of the canal towpath near the New York Stadium after the construction of a new canal towpath route through the stadium development.
