Tyre fire battle continuing

EFFORTS to tackle a blaze in a tyre depot are expected to extend “well into today,” according to a fire service spokesman.

More than 60 firefighters have been battling the blaze at White Lea Grove industrial units, in Mexborough, since fire broke out at around 1.30am yesterday morning.

More than 20 residents were evacuated from their homes on nearby Frederick Street and Cawood Street and others were warned to keep their windows and doors closed as around 120 tyres went up in flames and plumes of smoke filled the air.

This morning a spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “It has already been a huge effort but we are expecting to be at the fire well into today.

“It currently remains unsafe for the residents that were evacuated to return to their homes according to advice issued by the Health Protection Agency.”

Fire crews have called in extra foam supplies from brigades in Greater Manchester and Merseyside.
