Two flee after three seriously hurt in smash

POLICE are keen to speak to two people who left the scene of an accident in which three others were seriously injured.

Officers believe that five people were in a black Vauxhall Astra hatchback when it careered off Saltersbrook Road and ploughed into a field shortly after 4.30am on Sunday morning.

But just three men remained in the car when officers arrived at the scene near to the road’s junction with Bellebrooke Avenue.

A police spokesman said: “A 42-year-old Bolton-Upon-Dearne man was detained at Barnsley District General Hospital in a serious condition with a fractured shoulder, spine fracture and head injury.

“A 23-year-old Goldthorpe man was taken to hospital with a fractured shoulder. His condition was initially described as serious but he was not detained.

“A 41-year-old Barnsley sustained minor back and head injuries, was taken to hospital but not detained.

“He was arrested on suspicion of driving over the prescribed limit, dangerous driving and released on police bail pending further enquiries.”

The spokesman said that officers do not believe any other car was involved in the incident, but are keen to speak to the two people thought to have left the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the manner of driving prior to the car leaving the road is also being urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020, quoting incident number 252 of June 12.
