Treeton surgery set for expansion

PLANS for a bigger medical centre have been approved in a former pit village braced for a population boom.

The new GP practice and pharmacy will be built on scrubland near the current site at Arundel Street in Treeton.

It is predicted that the 4,000-property Waverley development will increase pressure on services in the area.

Planning documents said: “The existing practice’s inability to absorb any increase in patient numbers will become critical and the surrounding area is also struggling for capacity.

“The existing medical centre is too small to cope with the existing patient list size and GPs are on an enforced half-day every week to allow other services to use the consulting rooms.”

Access to the Miners’ Welfare Club next door had been a concern for the new development.

But special arrangements have been made for the NHS to provide a lay-by for beer delivery drivers.

Treeton’s mining history has contributed to relatively high levels of COPD, ischaemic heart disease and asthma.

Sheffield-based JTP Architects said: “The prominence of the site at the end of the street has been taken into account and the design takes the opportunity to create a landmark building.”
