Traffic disruption warning as Rotherham gas main up-graded

Five hundred metres of existinggas main is being replaced with plastic which has a lifespan of 80 years, in the £50,000 project.

Work has started at the junction of Fellowfields Way, which will be closed for one week with no access from Wortley Road.

It will continue in 100m sections moving down towards Braddgate Lane which will be controlled by two way traffic lights.

The work is expected to take three weeks and National Grid says it is working with Rotherham Borough Council to minimise disruption.

Project manager Christopher Wade said: "This project is a major investment in the safety and reliability of the gas supply in Rotherham.

WWe are starting this work during the summer when gas usage is lowest and the school holidays mean there are fewer traffic movements.

“This is a busy part of the road network but our traffic arrangements will ensure the traffic will continue to flow. It will be a short term inconvenience for long term benefit.”
