Traffic chaos after town centre smash

ROTHERHAM town centre ground to a halt as ambulance and fire service vehicles responded to a major traffic collision on Centenary Way.

A helicopter transported a doctor to the the dual carriageway, near to the New York Stadium, following the incident involving a Nissan sports car, at around 12.40pm.

It left roadside barriers tangled and traffic at a standstill, closing the road between Pool Green and the Ickles Roundabout.

One witness said: “There was traffic backed up every road into and out of the town. It was abosolute chaos.”

First responders and paramedics arrived on the scene in rapid response cars and ambulances after the incident, which also involved a lorry and resulted in injuries to two motorists.

One casualty had to be cut free by firefighters.

An ambulance service spokeswoman confirmed one person had been taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.
