Tory calls for public showdown

TORY election candidate James Hockney wants public debates with other candidates standing in Barnsley East.

Mr Hockney, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency, said, "I have been talking with residents with concern at the cynicism of the political process in Barnsley East. I have been ready to debate the issues locally at hustings since I was selected in November. Now that all the candidates have been confirmed I strongly call for public debates in Barnsley East at any time and location with them.

There are hustings taking place in neighbouring seats so Barnsley East should be no different. Our politics has been greatly damaged by the expenses scandal and those MP's who have put their pockets before our democracy and country.

Public debates are an opportunity to engage with the voters and show they have real choice for change at the electon. I feel the anger and frustration of the voters across Barnsley East at the current political process.

Many who get involved in politics are passionate about making a difference to the area locally. Our democracy is at its strongest when voters and politicians actively engage in the political process and our democracy.

This is why I am laying down the challenge to public debates with my rivals".
