Top Stroke Association award for Gemma

A ROTHERHAM speech therapist has won a national award commending her work with stroke survivors.

Gemma Morgan (29), a speech and language therapist, has beaten off stiff competition from around the UK to win The Stroke Association’s 2011 Life After Stroke Award for Excellence in Stroke Care.

She received her award from X Factor star Stacey Solomon at the award ceremony at the Claridge's Hotel, London.

The judges agreed that Gemma demonstrated tireless commitment to raising the quality of care for people experiencing difficulties after stroke.

She was commended for 'Communication Partners', a project she developed which trains language therapy students and volunteers.

Gemma was nominated by stroke survivor Christine Welburn.

Christine was unable to speak, read, or write after a stroke but 18 months later she has made a great recovery, becoming more confident and speaking in full sentences.

Gemma said: “I am so overwhelmed and proud to have won this award.

“It is recognition for what the stroke survivors, volunteers and staff involved in the project have achieved.”

Julia MacLeod, head of operations for The Stroke Association in Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “We're incredibly proud of Gemma’s achievements and the way she has worked so successfully with a number of organisations.

“Communication difficulties can be very frustrating and upsetting, so this project is vital in helping people who otherwise may become isolated from the outside world.”
