AN inquest has been opened into the death on an elderly woman who died after being airlifted to hospital by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance following a car crash in Tickhill.

Janet Murphy (72), a widow from Blyth Road, Maltby, was in the back of a silver Ford Focus which careered off the road and hit a tree in Sunderland Street, Tickhill, just before 11am on last Thursday.

The driver, a woman also from Maltby, and two other passengers escaped uninjured.

Paramedics were called to help the injured Mrs Murphy, who was flown to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. She died later the same day.

The inquest into her death was opened and adjourned today.
