Three months' disruption in road closure

A BUSY route through Rotherham will shut for three months for “vital” pedestrian safety improvements.

The stretch of Doncaster Road between Middle Lane and St Ann’s Road will be closed from Monday, July 26.

Highway works will be taking place to make the area safer for pedestrians around the Clifton Park area.

Rotherham Borough Council said the works were starting during the school summer break to minimise disruption.

A traffic diversion will be in place until Sunday, October 24, but will be lifted for the Rotherham Show in September.

The Rotherham Streetpride scheme is geared to improving access for pedestrians into the park from the Eastwood area, and making the area safer for Clifton Comprehensive School pupils.

The existing zebra crossing on Doncaster Road to Clifton Park will have improved footpaths and the two bus stops will be relocated.

A new zebra crossing will be installed across Doncaster Road between Cottenham Road and Middle Lane. A new footpath will be built adjacent to the park wall between Middle Lane and Clifton Park.

The third and final area of work is the resurfacing of Doncaster Road itself between St Ann’s Road and Wharncliffe Street.

Cllr Richard Russell, Cabinet member for Streetpride, said: “The park is a very popular venue and people travel there by all sorts of means so we have to try and ensure the safety of all road users, whether they are in a car, on the bus or are walking.

“The proximity of the secondary school also means the area sees a lot of young walkers who also need to be safe.

“We hope that motorists will be patient during the roadworks and make use of the suggested temporary diversions.”
