Thomas Rotherham College students on South Africa mission

A GROUP of  students are heading for South Africa to help needy orphans.

The convoy of 16 pupils and two teachers from Thomas Rotherham College will leave for Cape Town on July 2 to do voluntary work at an orphanage nearby.

The group hope to help children with their reading, writing and numeracy as well as running lots of sports sessions for them.

Trip organiser and PE teacher at the college, Ian Scotson (29), said that it was a wonderful opportunity in helping others.

“Cape Town is not massively run down, but where we are going, is,” he said.

“It really is a once in a lifetime experience, not just for me, but for the children as well.

“I really think it’s going to change a lot of people’s lives, we all take the things we have in this country for granted.

“Seeing people from different cultures will be different enough for everyone.

“It was my idea and I’ve always wanted to do it, it’s a good opportunity to get our students involved in something like this.

“It’s a massive well done to them, and I hope it all goes well.”
