'Surgeon left part of instrument in my leg'

WIDOW June Scragg says she has endured agony since a consultant at the centre of a storm of complaints left part of a surgical instrument in her leg.

Mrs Scragg (68), of Ingshead Avenue, Rawmarsh, said the instrument broke during a hip operation at Rotherham General Hospital carried out by consultant Manjit Bhamra four years ago.

She needed a second operation to remove it and says she has been left with a scar and now has to use a mobility scooter to get about.

In another case, 43-year-old Karl Manley, of Rolling Dales Close, Maltby, claims his shoulder was left “locked” after an operation by Mr Bhamra two years ago.

Mr Bhamra (55), who now  is a the centre of what  lawyers say is a "deeply worrying" number of complaints about botched operations.

Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust said it did not comment on individual cases because of confidentiality.

A spokeswoman said: “We’d like to stress that we do have a robust procedure in place so that we are able to fully investigate any complaints that are received and we continue to advise contact directly with the GP or through the trust’s formal complaints procedure, thereby allowing the appropriate respective investigations.”
