Organiser Kay Wassell said: “The event was a sell-out and I was really pleased at the number of people who went to great efforts to dress in the 1940s theme.

“Everyone attending said that it had been a brilliant night and some people said that it brought back many memories of the camaraderie during the war years.

“The support we received from everyone was marvellous.”

The tone for the night was set by a projection of Neville Chamberlain's famous war declaration speech which was followed by Winston Churchill’s We Shall Fight on the Beaches.

Guests enjoyed a slideshow accompanied by music from wartime entertainers, including Glen Miller, Vera Lynn, Arthur Askey and Gracie Fields.

There was also entertainment from the Gillian Banks Theatre School Spotlight Showgirls, who did an Andrews Sisters dance medley. Live music was provided by the Dearne Big Band and Singers.

After pie and peas and a raffle, with prizes donated by Rotherham businesses, it was the turn of the guests to provide entertainment.

Kay added: “We had a sing-a-long to some favourite wartime songs and everyone was waving their flags and up on their feet.

“The atmosphere was fantastic and for some people it was also very emotional.
